Spay-a-Thon a great success in Uniondale

The Uniondale Civic Centre was converted into an animal hospital to spay as much as possible animals in need and George Municipality did its part for the Uniondale community and their animals by hosting this Spay-a-thon.

Ricardo Classen from Uniondale Tourism assisted Tish Cummings, the coordinator of the event and local SPCA representative with sponsorships for accommodating the volunteers.

Animal Care Team SA with the assistance of the State Veterinary Offices from Oudtshoorn and George, Ebervet Petcare Group, Dr Garth Ryder from De Rust, SPCA George and Uniondale Petcare – sterilised 130 Animals in need from 24 to 25 April.

This joint outreach was born in 2018 after the SPCA George brought to our attention the great need in this area for assistance.  Uniondale is a small farming town of approximately 4500 people and they have no access to constant veterinary care.  SPCA George therefore has an outreach program in Uniondale and provides basic care.  With no access to a sterilisation program, animal welfare can’t be addressed fully.

With SPCA screening and the assistance of Tish Cummings a local from Uniondale, known as Uniondale Petcare and owner of The Town House, they identified within the community animals that needed to be sterilised.  They brought together a competent team of veterinarians, both private and from the state to assist in the 2 day Spay-a-Thon and the welfare teams consisted out of Animal Care Team SA and SPCA George with members of the Uniondale Community also pitching in to help.

A big thank you to Tish and David Cummings from The Townhouse, The Dog Box Project, Lions Club, Aloe Coffee Shop, Klein Karoo Café, SENTRA, Skoonheidsentrum, The Hungry Ghost Restaurant, SPAR, Huisie ommie Hoek, AGRI LAND, Ebervet Petcare Group, Dr Garth Ryder – De Rust – Veterinarian, State Veterinary Offices, Oudtshoorn and George and SPCA George.
