Book Launch of Hannes Visser's poetry book - Die jaar toe pa...

Book Launch of Hannes Visser Poetry book, Die jaar toe pa…

Date : Saturday 18th of May 2019

Time : 10:30 am

Venue : George Public Library Foyer

Hannes Visser, the writer of the Afrikaans poetry book, Die jaar toe pa… and editor of Oudtshoorn Courant will discuss his book at the launch.

The 62 poems in Die jaar toe pa... are detached moments in Visser's life when he was ten years old. Together, it forms a story, although most can stand alone. The year is 1967. The place is an environment in Roodepoort where he lived with his parents and brother.

Looking back, as an adult, he realises his family was largely dysfunctional. "Then I didn't see it that way. Everything that happened was just part of life." The poet talks about alcoholism, violence, verbal abuse, and the destructive treatment of domestic workers and other non-whites at a time when apartheid bloomed.
